1963 Ferrari 250P
by Dale King
This model was the third in the Retrotoys series and was a vast improvement over the D Jag. Apparently they used a different pattern maker as not only was the overall quality much better, but so was the engineering. Not being satisfied with leaving well enough alone, I did make a few modifications and additions. I opened all the various air vents, added the tube framing on the floor of the interior and hollowed out the insides of the doors, adding the 'pockets' .

As with the Jag I replaced the windshield and headlight ‘glass’. Unfortunately the wire wheels that came with the kit were made up of 3 layers of white metal spokes – each spoke the scale thickness of my thumb. Bosica came to the rescue by creating a beautiful set of hand spoked, brass replacements (pre painted semi gloss silver). Considering all the work that went into making these wheels I was stunned to find out they were only $15 apiece. An amazing price when you consider the quality.

Believe it or not, the model was painted with the new Tamiya spray can lacquers (pink first, then bright red) and then rubbed out. A very satisfying model that went together well. As they've done 3 Le Mans winners (they also produced the 1959 Aston Martin) I'm hoping the next one is the 1965 Ferrari 250 LM .
