This buyer's guide is a collection of reviews and recommendations
from several GPMA members,
including myself. Thanks to all of you who contributed.
Each vendor name is highlighted in the reviews, and you
can see each one (and some that
aren't listed in the reviews) in the Alphabetical
List of Vendors below. Links to vendor websites
are included where available. See each website for more contact
details.
Now let's call these vendors and spend a few bucks to keep
the hobby going! -KJS.
From Tim Hoh:
There's a guy in British Columbia Canada named Dennis who
runs Columbia
Model Express. He's got
reasonable prices and a lot of stock. Also Hobbyweb
has reasonable prices.
From Dan Wildhirt:
A few vendors/products/shameless plugs for your guide:
--www.amazon.com: Classic
Motorbooks may be a fine source for reference
material, I've been able to find any car book in print through
Amazon,
and usually at least 15 percent off retail -- sometimes more.
They'll
even search for out-of-print titles.
--F1 Specialties: Lots more
than just F1 stuff, they have some great
decal conversions and kits that are available nowhere else.
The only
place to get alternative decals for Tamiya's 1/12 Lola T70
and Lotus 49.
--Replicas and Miniatures:
Many items of interest to the GPMA crowd,
such as Minilite and Halibrand wheels, Indy and F1 tire stencils,
vintage treaded racing tires, Ferrari 250 engine kits, etc.
--Wheat's Nostalgia: They
deal primarily in promos, but they also have
an extensive list of OOP built and unbuilt kits. I bought
a built-up MPC
Shalako dune buggy from them earlier this year. Great service!
From Jim Hunt:
My kits come from the usual mail order sources, Valley
Plaza, Motoi et al.
But I found a couple of unusual items for the new Tamiya kits
that may be of
interest.

of course there's MRM.
From Charles W. Salzmann:

This is what a Bosica 1/43 Ferrari 156/85 looks like. Unmatched
detail and craftsmanship in 1/43 scale.

From Hossain Salimi:
1. Valley Plaza Hobbies in
Nevada (702)887-1131. The owner, Woody, is always
very helpful and seems to have one of the bigger selections
of racing cars and
the prices are usually the lowest.
2. Turn One Racing in Washington
(604) 582-1040. The owner, Lance, is a nice
guy and does accept trades. He does have some of the
rare and hard to find
Tamiya and Hasegawa kits. His prices are reasonable,
especially on the newest
releases.
3. Columbia Model Express
in Canada (250) 365-5700. The owner, Dennis, is
extremely nice and has most of the available Grand
Prix kits as well as a lot
of accessories. He does accept offers and lowers the
asking prices if you buy
a few kits from him.
4. Anthony Figuereido
in Colorado. I can't find his phone number, but he is a
very nice guy and his latest prices were extremely low.
To name a few, I
bought a Tamiya 1/12 Lola t-70 for $100.00, and a Tamiya 1/18
Lola for $20.00
from him recelntly and he even threw in a Chevron 1/12 Seat
Harness kit for
free!! However, I believe he is getting out of the plastic
kit business and
may not have much left in his stock.
5. Rainbow Ten and HobbyLink
Japan. I have bought kits from
both and the service was great. I was able to get great
deals from both
including a 1/12 Tamiya Lotus 49B from Rainbow for 4000 Yen
which is
equivalent to about $35.00, and a Modelers 1/20 Moon Craft
Special from
Hobby Link of Japan for about $30.00. There is of course shipping
and
a 3 to 4 week wait, but they're well worth the wait!
The Tamiya Lotus 25 is now available
for 2400 Yen from Hobbylink Japan.
(HobbyLink Japan Photo)
From Bo Anckarman:
I tried HOBBYLINK once, but wasn't too impressed by their
response to my
questions or their delivery date. I also tried RAINBOW
TEN once, but the result
was totally different: Quick and friendly answers to
inquiries, and a quick delivery.
SUPERB!
I buy decals and wheels and stuff from my friend Leif Andersson:
He sells decals (several scales) from Virage, Calligraph,
etc. and wheels
as well as kits from LeMans Miniatures. Send him a fax, saying
what you're
looking for, and maybe he'll find it. It's definitely worth
the try!
When I need a Fred Cady decal,
I order it directly from him: very quick delivery.
From Chip Wamsley:
I just got some newly released products from Detail Master. You might have to
buy them direct as they are really fresh. I got mine from
the designer, Gary
Kulchock who lives nearby. First is a really nice photoetched
radiator
screen. It probablly would take two packs for most 1/24
F1 cars to do both
front and back of both radiators--and four packs for
1/12 cars. The second
item is a really great set of photoetched hose clamps.
Included is a wire to
replicate screw clamps. Finally they have added some
nice Borrani 72-spoke
wires: photoetched with machined aluminum rims, which are
available in two
widths. These come with three-prong knockoffs. The screen
and hose clamps
should be about $6.00 and the wheels are $35.00 for
the set of four.
At a show recently I bought some nice photoetched ventilated
discs with
machined alloy top hats and a template for drilling hub lugs,
in 1/24 scale.
These were from MAS (machined aluminum specialties) in Ohio.
They fit well
in some Scale Designs wheels
that I am putting on a Ferrari F40 LM. The
price was $10.00.
From Joe Mincolla:
Please include First Formula North
America -Keith Hudak
in the upcoming buyer's guide. This may sound a bit
over-stated
but Keith is probably the nicest person I have met (in or
out of the
modeling hobby). He puts out a newsletter 6-8 times a year
which includes
most new 43rd scale releases from major and minor manufacturers.
He also
includes a list of trade-ins, sale items, etc. Keith
(and usually his wife)
also travels to many race events to talk, sell, and generally
get to know
his customers. He always has a smile and time to talk
with just about
anybody. He recognizes my voice on the phone, and probably
knows the first
names of all of his customers. Obviously, I recommend
him without reservation.
From Roberto - Icaro Model Shop:
Hi all,
I will receive in few days the Revell Jordan and Williams.
Still don't know
the price, anyway, if it's like the other Revell's F1 here
it should be
something around lit.36000. If someone is interested,
just let me know.
Also will be available the Ferrari F310B from BBR, Montecarlo
version (rain
tyres), and I'm thinking about the possibility of having these
tyres
separately.
Also I'm planning a Marlboro decal set for the new
Ferrari F310B from Tamiya,
these should be already available as I will ask the manufacturer
that works for BBR.
Anyway, to be sure of the measures, I'd like to check
before. For this, because the
new Ferrari should be available soon somewhere and
here only in January,
as soon as someone of you has this kit in hands, plase
let me know so that
we can check something.
Regards,
Roberto
From Randy Frost of Perry's Resin Replicas:

and
very high-quality instructions. Parts count for this kit is
