1966 Penske 427 Coupe
by David Hardcastle
This is the Penske 427 Corvette based on a Monogram 1965 Corvette Coupe kit. I bought the DMC decals and resin wheels at the 1999 Modelex exhibition, but I had to wait until I could get the excellent MRM feature on the cars before I could begin work, as my searches for reference material up until that point had been fruitless.
I used the kit engine but fitted the cylinder heads from the Monogram Owen Corning Corvette so that the headers and exhausts from the same kit could be used. I also used two of the bucket seats from the OC kit, as the fabricated roll bar meant a standard passenger seat would not fit (the real car was thought to have only one racing seat).
The tyres are Monogram Goodyear's racers converted to Firestones by removing the lettering and adding gold decals from the Fujimi Ferrari 330 P4. I am so pleased with the model that I am now going to build the 1966 Daytona car, as the DMC sheet has decals for both cars.
