1/24 1967 Terlingua Mustang
by Goran Kindlund

I guess the original of my model doesn't need much presentation. It is, of course, the 1967 Trans-Am winner. Entered by Carroll Shelby, under the somewhat cryptic name Terlingua Racing Team, and driven by Jerry Titus.

Here are a few of my references:

  • Vintage Motorsport No. 5: 1995
  • "Terlingue: The saga of 7RO1K218310," article in Mustang Monthly, March 1991 by Jerry Heasley
  • Trans-Am Racing 1966-85 by Albert R. Bochroch
  • Fast Mustangs by Alex Gabbard
  • Mustang Boss 302 by Donald Farr

Vintage Motorsport, together with Bochroch's book, contains the most comprehensive information about the 1967 race season, while the rest contain more technical information on the car. The article in Mustang Monthly is about a restored car.

Finding reliable references of a race car is mostly very tricky, because race cars are normally continuously changed over the race season, sometimes even over a race weekend. The basic reasons are development and repair of damage. According to my references, the Terlingua Mustang was actually several, at least two, different cars.

The 1967 Trans Am was comprised of 12 races. From those I have pictures of the Terlingua Mustang from 10 races. Some pictures are good close-ups, and others are fairly unclear (and only one is in color). From that I can say that the car looked different in each race. The differences are in the race stripe, sponsor decals, and other such details.

I chose not to specify a race from which I have built my model, rather to say "It did look like this at some time during the season."

My Model: The basic problem I encountered was the fact that there is no model kit made of a 1967 hatchback Mustang. This was solved by incorporating the roof and boot lid from the AMT 1966 hatchback with the AMT 1967 fastback, #6631.

This involved some reshaping of the rear valances of both the roof and boot lid to have it conform to the 1967 model shape.

The interior had to be reshaped too, but since the race car lacked most of the car's original interior, this was easily made using some plasic card. A roll cage was scratchbuilt and the instrument dash was rebuilt.

The rest of the model is basically the AMT 1967 Mustang fastback, with proper modifications and detailing to resemble the real car. But my intention was not to build a super-detailed model, so the build-up is quite basic.

The engine was rebuilt with a double 4-bbl intake and a scratchbuilt aircleaner. Headers and exhaust pipes were scratchbuilt as well. The gearbox in the kit is a T10, which was swapped for the more correct Top Loader from an AMT '66 Fairlane, which also supplied a nine inch rear axle. The wheels come from an AMT '68 Shelby Mustang, and the tires are from the spares box, which also supplied many other details as well. Some p/e parts were used for detailing.

Most of the decals were custom made on my computer and printed on a laser printer. The specific Terlingua Team Logo was downloaded from the Internet.

This is a project that has been dwelling in my mind for a long time, and I am grateful to the GPMA that it finally came up from my workbench.
