Event Report

This year’s So Cal NNL was a big step forward for the event, which is run by our member Chris Hale. The attendance was great this year, with good-sized crowds throughout the day. Several race car modelers brought their work to show off, as seen in this brief review of the show.

  

  

Dale King showed some of his 1/12 Porsches, including a 935 and several 962s

   

  

  

It was nice to see Lindley Ruddick, Charles Fox, Henry Gonzales, and Dale King.
George Schaeffer also made it to the show, all the way from Florida.

  

Paul Cadwell showed his Audi and Martini Alfa, along with these impressive GP Bikes:

  

  

Chris Hale displayed his GT40 and amazing Lotus 56B Offenhauser Indy Car

  

  

Chris won the Theme award with this unique model.

  

Russ Bundy displayed several Indy Car models. This is the 1967 Indy 500 winning Coyote-Ford.

  

  

Perhaps the most impressive model at the show was this Pocher Alfa Romeo built by Gary Arnette.

Carrera Panamericana Contest

One of the most grueling road races ever held, the Carrera Panamericana has become
a legend in the annals of motor racing history. The great Mexican Road Race, 
which included many different types and models of racing vehicles, provides
a good source of inspiration for model builders.

While there are many kits available to build specific Carrera cars, Scale Designs has
announced new decal sheets that will be available soon to help you build several
Carrera models, some of which are shown here.

Here are the rules:

Models must represent a car entered in one of the five original La Carrera races
from 1950 through 1954. No phantoms or mystery cars. Multiple entries are OK.
Anything from scratch-builts through upgraded die-casts are allowed, as long as
you put some work into making the model as accurate as possible.

Voting will take place on the Yahoo Groups site.

First prize will be a kit and decals to build a Carrera car. Details will be announced soon.

NNL West 2011

This year’s show included a large number of race cars, many built by our own members,
as you will see below.

   
  

Mike Alvarez is a group member and professional model builder.
These three are just examples of the nice work he does.

  
  

Mike Siegman is an experienced modeler who also likes 1/43 scale.
This year’s 1/43 turnout was probably the best we’ve seen yet.

  
  
  
  

Henry Trent came out from Atlanta to display some of his latest projects.
His BMW M1 and Ford GT40 were especially nice.

  
  

William Bauer displayed his popular Wally Castro Trans-Am Mustang along
with the recently featured Maxum and the classic Probe GTP.

  
  

Curt Raitz always brings several impressive models to the show. The Bugatti
Tank is mostly scratch-built, along with a few parts from Bugatti 35 and
MG TC kits.

  
  

Thomas McNamara’s Tyrrell 6-wheeler was very clean, as were his Peugeot
206 and McLaren M8B.

  

Hossain Salimi showed some of his latest builds, which are always well-done.

  

John Roberts showed two Ferraris with deep, rich paintwork that doesn’t show
in these photos. You have to see these models in person to appreciate the finish.

  

Andy Kellock likes to display his cars together in a group, which makes
it hard to decide on a favorite. They are all exceptional.

  
  

Brendan Howden showed the Revell AG DTM Audi and Mercedes. He likes the kits,
and the results are impressive. His sleek Nissan GTP is a unique design.

  
  

Keith Brumbley, last year’s GPMA award winner, brought two Heller F1 cars.
Anyone who has attempted these kits knows how hard it is to make them look good.
The Ferrari 340 is appropriate for our upcoming contest.

This year’s award was a very difficult decision. After much consideration by the judges,
we decided upon the Audi R8 by Mike Siegman. Congratulations Mike!

Jagermeister Porsche 935

This model is built using the recent reissue of Tamiya’s first 1/24 kit (24001).
I built it in 12 hours straight at one of the Guelph Plastic Modellers Group’s
infamous 12 hour builds.

It’s basically box stock because of the time constraint. 
I opened up the rear fender flares a bit and used smaller diameter rear wheels 
from a Tamiya BMW 320i.

Decals are from many sources, but I know the Jager decals are Raceworks.
Paint is also Tamiya, TS-12 orange straight from the can.

What you see here is just a small portion of an incredible Work in Progress (WIP) featured on the F1M forum. The story of this model, the photos and text showing how it was built, and the finished product are all impressive. Some have called it a master class in model building, but I think the professor is way ahead of his students in this case. Congratulations to our member JayKay for completing his project and establishing the gold standard in WIP articles.

Lotus 56B Offenhauser Indy Car

For the 1969 Indy 500, Art Pollard qualified the converted Lotus 56b “Offy” in 12th place. After 7 laps the drive line snapped, and the car finished 31st.

 

This is a replica of that car, after 5 months of work the results are obvious, 120+ RB Motion turned Aluminum bolts, washers and nuts, over 6 feet of Stainless, Aluminum and Brass rod and tubing, numerous feet of styrene sheet and rod.

No putty or filler was used in the body modifications; it’s all styrene. There are over 40 hose clamps, as well as many feet of hose and wire.

 

Months of research went into the build. With only a half dozen pictures of the actual car, many hours of engineering went into the build process. Based on the MPC 1968 STP Turbine kit, there are no original kit parts left, only scratchbuilt or modified parts. What were originally some 95 kit parts became over 600 parts.
